Description
When the almost six months of Swedish winter are over and the last traces of snow and ice are finally gone, all eyes are looking for the first signs of spring. The first flower to appear is Coltsfoot, real name Tussilago Farfara or as it is known here in Sweden, just Tussilago. It is a most unusual flower in that it produces flowers first which then die back before any leaves grow. It seems as though it is two seperate plants, one producing no leaves and the other, no flowers. The flowers are almost like small dandelions and they always cause great excitement amongst the children (and some adults), when the first ones are found. This particular example was the very first one that my children came running in with. I hit upon the idea of placing it in a rainbow of light caused by a glass crystal, hanging in the kitchen window. The rainbow was moving, so it took many attempts to get this image. I couldn't get a better one than this. I added a canvas texture to the image to enable larger print sizes. Pretty amazing considering this flower was only the size of of fingernail!
