Description
Oakworth is a West Yorkshire village which lies between the towns of Haworth and Keighley. As well as being located in the heart of Bronte Country, an area said to have inspired many of the works of the Bronte sisters, it's mainly known for it's delightful little railway station, part of the preserved Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Railway. Oakworth station played a key part in the 1970 film, The Railway Children, based on the novel by E. Nesbit. There can hardly be a person in Britain, who hasn't seen this film and been touched by the moving scene towards the end of the film where the character of Roberta, played by Jenny Agutter, runs down the platform to meet her father when he gradually emerges from a cloud of steam as the train he was on pulls away. It's a classic moment in British cinema history. I was lucky enough to spend a holiday in Haworth, which was also much used in the film. Both on foot and by steam train, I was able to explore this beautiful area of England, locating nearly all the places used in The Railway Children. A wonderful experience which I will never forget and hope to repeat one day.
