Description
Many years ago, when I still lived in England, I was lucky enough to spend a holiday in the West Yorkshire town of Haworth, As well as being located in the heart of Bronte Country, an area said to have inspired many of the works of the Bronte sisters, it's also known for being used for many scenes in the 1970 film, The Railway Children, based on the novel by E. Nesbit. The railway used in the film was the preserved Keighley and Worth Valley Steam Railway. The 5 mile long railway runs between Keighley and Oxenhope. One of the stations it passes through is in Haworth. Both on foot and by steam train, I was able to explore this beautiful area of England, locating nearly all the places used in The Railway Children. Whilst on a walk, searching for 'The Three Chimneys' house used in the film, I stumbled upon this delightful little house. I thought it might make a good painting. That was about twenty years ago. I just got round to painting it. Why anyone would abandon this I don't know! When I was researching this information, I found a website with this particular walk, which included many photos. I was amazed to find a photo of the house with a brief description. It is a derelict farmhouse, part of North Far Ives Farm. It is also known as Orlando Littler's Cottage, after the last person to live there and is rumoured to have been used in an earlier 1968 BBC production of The Railway Children. I only hope that I get the chance to go back to this wonderful part of England one day.
