Description
7F 2-8-0 Number 88 arrives at Blue Anchor station from Minehead, on its 22 mile journey to Bishops Lydeard, on the West Somerset Railway. The signalman standing on the platform is preparing to exchange tokens, necessary for the train to continue it's journey. The tokens ensure that only one train can be on a particular stretch of line at a time. This magnificent steam locomotive is one of two that survive today from the eleven that were designed and built specifically for the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway, in two batches in 1914 and 1925. The engines remained in operation until they were withdrawn between 1959 and 1964. Number 88 was acquired by the Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway Trust in 1969 from Woodham's scrap yard in Barry, South Wales and eventually restored by The West Somerset Railway, returning to steam in August 1987.
