Description
British Railways Class 2 2-6-0 locomotive no. 78019 steams into Rothley station. The station is part of the Great Central heritage steam railway in Leicestershire. This design of steam locomotive was an updated version of the successful Ivatt 2MT. 78019 was built in Darlington and entered service in 1954. Withdrawn in 1966, the engine was sent to Woodhams yard in Barry, South Wales to await scrapping. Rescued by Charles Newton, the locomotive was moved to the Severn Valley Railway in 1973, but was not restored until it was moved to Loughborough on the GCR in a joint ownership deal with Loughborough Standard Locomotive Group Ltd. It was returned to steam in 2004.
