Description
The locomotive seen here is Ivatt Class 2 2-6-0, no. 46521, built at Swindon Works for British Rail in 1953. It spent most of it's working life in Owestry in Wales before being transferred to London Midland Region in 1962 and was eventually withdrawn from service in 1966. The following year 46521 was sent to Barry scrapyard. The loco was saved from scrapping by Charles Newton who bought it and moved it to the Severn Valley Railway where it was restored and eventually returned to service in 1974. During it's time at the SVR, the steam engine was used in the BBC comedy series 'Oh Doctor Beeching'. In 2001 the engine was moved to the Great Central Railway in Loughborough, Leicestershire where it underwent major restoration work which was not completed until the end of 2011. This picture from 2014 at the GCR, shows 46521 at the centre of a lot of steam action and a nice contrast to the boiler in the background, waiting patiently for it's turn to be returned to steam.
