Description
Locomotive 5239, named Goliath, is a Great Western Railway 5205 class 2-8-0T tank engine. 5239 is owned today by the Dartmouth Steam Railway and River Boat Company. This class of locomotive was designed by Charles Collett for use taking heavy coal trains from the mines in Wales. Built in 1924 for GWR at Swindon, the locomotive remained in service at Neath until being withdrawn in 1963 at the end of the steam era. It was sold for scrapping to Woodham Brothers Ltd in Barry, Wales. It was the fifth of over two hundred British steam locomotives rescued from Barry for preservation. Bought by the Dart Valley Railway, 5239 was eventually returned to steam in 1978 and can be seen here at Paignton station in Devon. I am indebted to FAA photographer Terri Waters for letting me use one of her excellent series of original photographs from the Dartmouth Steam Railway, to create this painting.
