Description
This impressive yellow daisy-like flower grew in my garden for several years before I ever saw it flower. You might wonder how anybody could miss such a beautiful flower, especially as the flower heads are 4 to 5 cm (1 1/2" to 2") diameter and are about a meter (39 1/2") tall! Well they didn't exactly go unnoticed. I saw the plants with their ornately shaped flower buds. I often wondered what those buds would open up to, but in the end I started to think that they never opened. Eventually, I found out that they only open early in the morning and are closed again well before midday. They like sunshine too, staying closed all day if it's a dull day. They have several names: Meadow Salsify, Showy Goat's-beard, Meadow Goat's Beard and Jack-Go-To-Bed-At-Noon. The Latin name is Tragopogon pratensis. Whatever name you choose to call them, they are well worth getting up early to see. This one was captured at 7.59 am.
