Description
Ashridge woods is part of the Ashridge Estate, Berkhamsted, England, owned and maintained by The National Trust. The entire estate covers an area of 2000 hectares or 5000 acres. A large part of the estate is covered by beautiful woodland and comprises a network of footpaths. Some of these (nature trails) are marked by numbered posts, which are great fun for children to find and follow. This scene was taken from one of these nature trails. It is painted in oils but they were mixed with an oil gel, enabling a much quicker and impressionist approach. This was painted a good few years ago and I didn't think oils really suited my style. Viewing it again now, I am quite pleased with it. I wanted to show the sunlight shining through the trees with their autumn colours on a crisp October morning and this painting really reminds me of that. On such days, these woods draw hundreds of visitors. Even with the high numbers of visitors, Ashridge woods offer a peaceful and beautiful area where one can come to enjoy nature and observe a host of wildlife.
