Description
Sheringham is a seaside town in Norfolk, England and has long been a favourite place of mine to visit. I first went there as a child in the late sixties. Back in those days, I was only interested in the beach and it's steam railway. I saw the fishing boats from time to time, but didn't really take much notice of them. At one time there had been about 200 boats in Sheringham which was originally a small fishing village, but developed into a thriving town. The railway was the means of transporting fresh fish, crabs and lobsters. Nowadays, the fishing industry has declined and there are just a handful of boats left in Sheringham. I love to see old traditions carrying on and wanted to do a painting of the seafront, showing the fishing boats. My son tried to get a photo when he was there, but the boats were out at sea. Recently, my brother transferred some old slides that my father took, to digital images. This scene was among them and was just what I wanted. Quite a family effort!
