Description
I don't have much time for flies, but when I'm photographing flowers and find a fly on a flower, I consider that it's got as much right to be there as I have. Whilst getting some shots of Golden Rod, this Hoverfly decided to pay a visit. I didn't know much about Hoverflies, except that they look very similar to wasps but don't sting. I had no idea that they are infact one the garden's good guys. Hoverflies, also known as flower flies or syrphid flies, mainly feed on pollen and nectar. They cause no damage to the plants and whilst feeding, they are also pollinating. Some of the approximately 6000 species are being considered as a biological pest control. While the larvae of some Hoverflies live on decaying plant and animal matter, others live off apids and thrips, the cause of huge amounts of crop damage around the world. Whichever species this one is, it's welcome in my garden!
