This beautiful European peacock butterfly was enjoying some nectar from thistles on a sunny afternoon in August. These fabulous winged insects are a common sight in the Summer months in gardens and meadows in Europe. It's official name is inachis io, but most people just know it as a peacock butterfly. It is easily distinguished by the wonderful eye like patterns on it's wings, thought to be possible deterrent to predators.
