I don't know if this was the meaning of the title, but can I say that it struck me as a real metaphor for who we are? We all do have that shadow of ourselves in contrast to who God made us to be. Really beautiful painting.

Beautiful - I always have a little pull at my heart when I see one of these trees leaning out over the river.

Artist's Description

Everything has to come to an end sometime, whether it is an ant or an elephant, a blade of grass or a tree. We all hope to live our lives to our full potential and have a long and happy life. Unfortunately, it doesn't always work out that way. This was a view walking along the local river bank. This, once beautiful healthy tree, for one reason or another, just keeled over and died. Maybe it had died first and fallen over the river. It had a lovely dark reflection in the almost still river. Even though it had come to the end of it's life prematurely, it was still going on making a beautiful image. I tried to capture the scene here in this painting. I particularly wanted to show the lovely sky colours and the yellow reflection of the building on the far bank. At this spot the river cuts in sharply from the far bank, just before it passes under Domnarvet's bridge in Borlange, Sweden.

About Martin Howard

Martin Howard

I am an English Artist living in Borlange, Sweden since 2005. I have been painting on and off since the early eighties, in oils to begin with before moving on to watercolours. I also have an interest in photography which I have often used as part of my preliminary work for my paintings. In recent months, I have had a little extra time on my hands, which has fuelled my artistic fire. I find that I am experimenting much more with my photography to create more abstract images at the same time as learning new methods of processing photographs. This in turn, is influencing my ideas for paintings. Anybody visiting my website, will find a real mixture of styles and mediums and I believe, something for everybody. The reason that I paint or take...
