Artist's Description
Old man of the earth is the literal translation of the Swedish word for strawberry, jordgubbe. When I created this image I was trying to get something that would be impressive and beautiful, without moving too far from the original photograph. This is the version that fitted my idea best. It re minds me of Andy Warhol's banana. The strawberry I used for my initial photograph, had just been picked from my garden. These particular strawberries are called 'Polka'. I don't know if they are available everywhere or just in Scandinavia. I've been growing these for six or seven years now and they are a real favourite of mine. They are a middle early variety with large shiny dark red berries and an aromatic taste. Apparently, they can be deep frozen although none of my crop of strawberries has ever made it that far!

About Martin Howard
I am an English Artist living in Borlange, Sweden since 2005. I have been painting on and off since the early eighties, in oils to begin with before moving on to watercolours. I also have an interest in photography which I have often used as part of my preliminary work for my paintings.
