Artist's Description
When I found these mushrooms, I had no idea what they were. It's hard to see just how big these mushrooms were from the photograph, but the biggest was about the size of a small football. They are the biggest mushrooms I have ever seen and are in fact Giant Puffballs, latin name Calvatia gigantea. These two were growing beside a path in a nature reserve in Borlnge, Sweden, but giant puffballs can be found in most temperate countries. Strangely, in neighbouring Norway, the giant puffball is considered to be rare and a conservation concern. I didn't know at the time, but these mushrooms are edible at this stage in their development. Had I known that, I would not have touched them anyway, but left them for others to marvel at. Even if they are considered common (at least in England), in all the years I have explored the woods there, I never saw one.
About Martin Howard

I find that I am experimenting much more with my photography to create more abstract images at the same time as learning new methods of processing photographs. This in turn, is influencing my ideas for paintings. Anybody visiting my website, will find a real mixture of styles and mediums and I believe, something for everybody. The reason that I paint or take...
