Description
Growing up in the sixties, I knew the name, Jimi Hendrix, long before I knew who he was. By the time I discovered Jimis amazing music, he was long gone. I remember seeing a couple of documentary films, one about the Monterey Pop festival and the other, Woodstock. Jimi made a huge impression on me in both films. At the Monterey Pop festival, Jimi was just beginning to make a name for himself. He put on a wild performance which culminated in him setting fire to his guitar with lighter fuel. At Woodstock, Jimi was much more controlled, but just as memorable. Jimi actually closed the Woodstock festival. It was Monday morning, August 18th 1969. The festival should have ended on Sunday, but bad weather and technical problems caused it to roll over into Monday. At the peak of the festival, there had been 500,000 people in the audience, but only 200,000 were left when Jimi played. As Jimi closed Woodstock, it was as if he was closing the sixties.
