Artist's Description
Fireweed is otherwise known as Rosebay Willowherb (Latin name: Chamerion angustifolium). The leaves of this plant are very willow-like and presumeably that's why it got it's name. Personally, I prefer the other name, Fireweed. It got that name because it likes to grow on areas of wasteland and land where the vegetation has been burned back by fire. It is known to grow beside railway tracks, particularly on steam railways, where the sparks from the engines sometimes give rise to track-side fires. Though classed as a weed, I think these wonderful plants, with their tall spires of elongated buds and bright purple-pink flowers, look good in any garden. I'm certainly glad to see it in my garden each year.

About Martin Howard
I am an English Artist living in Borlange, Sweden since 2005. I have been painting on and off since the early eighties, in oils to begin with before moving on to watercolours. I find that I am experimenting much more with my photography to create more abstract images at the same time as learning new methods of processing photographs. This in turn, is influencing my ideas for paintings. Anybody visiting my website, will find a real mixture of styles and mediums and I believe, something for everybody. The reason that I paint or take...
