Description
Wish you were here is a phrase mostly used on holiday postcards. The village in this painting is a popular holiday destination in Somerset called Blue Anchor. The preserved steam railway is the West Somerset Railway. I had never heard of this place or it's railway until I spent a holiday there in 1990. After that holiday I never really ever wanted a holiday anywhere else. During the twelve years that followed, there were not many summers that I didn't at least spend one week in Blue Anchor. It's probably not everybody's cup of tea, but for me, this is the best place in the world. Sadly, it's been a while since I was there last so it's more a case of "wish I was there". One day I will get back there and I know it will all still be there. I might not see this particular engine, No 4277 as it is now owned by The Dartmouth Steam Railway. These 4200 Class 2-8-0T steam engines were designed for hauling coal through the Welsh valleys, but this one certainly didn't look out of place as it pulled a passenger train to Minehead.
