Description
Magnificent King penguins (Aptenodytes patagonicus) seen here in captivity at Whipsnade Zoo, near Dunstable, England. These unmistakable penguins are the second biggest species in the world after the emperor penguin, weighing between 11 and 16 kg and reaching 1 metre in height. King penguins come from northern reaches of Antarctica. They have the ability to stay under water for over 8 minutes and can dive to depths over 300 metres when hunting for mostly small fish and squid. These particular penguins didn't get to practice their hunting skills at the zoo. When I took this photograph in 1993, I had already been to Whipsnade zoo on countless occasions, having lived so near and unfortunately took sights like this for granted. There have not been any of king penguins at Whipsnade zoo for over 15 years. As far as I know, king penguins can only be seen at two places in the Uk. I now realise how lucky I was!
