Description
This photo of a swan on the Grand Union Canal, is one of my all time favourites. This was in the days before digital cameras. I just took the one photo and got lucky. This is quite an important photograph for me. When I first got married, I didn't have an awful lot of money or the desire to travel abroad. One of the most memorable holidays that I ever had was when we went to stay a few days with some family friends in Bristol, one of the nicest couples you could ever meet. The man was a railway artist and over those days, which were marvellous sunny days, he introduced me to watercolour painting and his favourite impressionist painters. All this made quite an impression with me and when I got home, I decided to try painting with watercolours. This was at a time in my life when I had mostly painted in oils, but found the time it took to paint, too long and it was rare that I finished a painting. I had virtually given up painting. This was the first photo, I tried to paint. I had it framed professionally and put it up for sale in a local art shop. It sold and for a nice price. I didn't sell any more paintings, but it didn't matter, my artist fire was burning once more.
