These lovely, bright green runner beans were one of the few successes from my vegetable garden in 2012. I had little bit of luck really because the first hard frost didn't come until late September. That meant quite a nice harvest. Had the frost come at the start of September instead, I would have just had enough for a couple of meals. The seeds wont grow a giant beanstalk that I can climb to another world, but instead it is the distinctive smell that takes me on a journey. When I smell freshly sliced runner beans, I am transported back in time to the 1960's, when my father would take me with him to see my grandma, on a Sunday morning. She would always be preparing a Sunday roast and those wonderful smells from her kitchen, including the runner beans, I don't think I can ever forget.

The reason that I paint or take...
