Description
A barge moored on the Grand Union Canal at Sandy Bridge, Linslade, Leighton Buzzard, England. This was a scene that I saw so many times when I went fishing and although very scenic, the barges were never a welcome sight. I could tolerate them while they were moored, but as soon as they started to travel up and down the canal, they became a nuisance. They disturbed the water as they went past and when they entered a lock. The locks separate sections of the canal at different levels and enable the boats to move between sections by either releasing water into the lock from upstream or from the lock into the downstream section. Sometimes both actions are required. The release of water causes a surge of water which travels to the end of the section and then goes back in the other direction. This continues until the surge loses strength. All that movement is not good for fishing, but then the canals were built for boats not fishermen.
