Description
An attractive, hoof-shaped fungus found in the forest which grows mainly on dead coniferous trees. If I wanted to convince anybody that fairies were responsible for painting mushrooms, then this would be the perfect evidence. The photo shows a fallen birch leaf which seems to have been trapped in creamy white paint. This white outer band is the newest growth and it's pores can produce watery droplets as seen here. The oldest growth is a dark brown colour with the intermediate band, orange or red. It's scientific name is Fomitopsis Pinicola with common names Red-Belt Conk, Red-Belted Bracket and Red-Banded Polypore. These mushrooms are slow growing and have a quite woody texture and so are unsuitable for eating.
