Description
At the end of my road is a narrow strip of land. There used to be trees, wild flowers and blueberries growing there, but not now. The council decided to lay a pipeline to the next town, so that the two towns could exchange hot water left over from industry, to heat homes. All signs of life were removed and small explosions took place, to blast a way through the rocky ground. Over a year later, the pipes have been laid, but they haven't been covered yet. I walked past there in early April, along the dry, sandy track that the construction machines use. I was pleasantly surprised to find a new sort of explosion, these Coltsfoot flowers, bursting out of the sand. How nice to see nature fighting back! Their real name is Tussilago Farfara or as they are known here in Sweden, just Tussilago. It is a most unusual flower in that it produces flowers first which then die back before any leaves grow. It seems as though it is two separate plants, one producing no leaves and the other, no flowers.
