Description
Fireweed is otherwise known as Rosebay Willowherb (Latin name: Chamerion angustifolium). The leaves of this plant are very willow-like and presumably that's why it got it's name. Personally, I prefer the other name, Fireweed. It got that name because it likes to grow on areas of wasteland and land where the vegetation has been burned back by fire. It is known to grow beside railway tracks, particularly on steam railways, where the sparks from the engines sometimes give rise to track-side fires. Though classed as a weed, I think these wonderful plants, with their tall spires of elongated buds and bright purple-pink flowers, look good in any garden. I'm certainly glad to see it in my garden each year.
