Description
Cleeve Abbey is a wonderful piece of medieval history to be found in the Somerset village of Washford. I've been to Washford countless times by car, on foot and by steam train on The West Somerset Railway. Despite all that, I've never actually been inside the abbey to take a closer look. I quite enjoy exploring historical buildings, but I think the attraction of the steam trains, the local pub and the beautiful surrounding countryside, always won the day. The abbey was founded in the twelfth century as a monastery for Cistercian monks. It was closed during the dissolution in 1536 by Henry VIII and the church was destroyed. The gatehouse and cloister buildings survived and are today looked after by English Heritage. My in-laws have been frequent visitors to Cleeve Abbey and love the place. It was at their request that I painted this picture and I will be giving it to them at the next opportunity.
