Description
A Rhinoceros Beetle found in my garden in Sweden. What an impressive beast this beetle is, looking more like prehistoric dinosaur than an insect. I've had a lot of creatures in my garden in Sweden that I never would have had in England. I've seen Moose, Deer and Rabbits. Who knows what else might visit or live there, but I never expected to find one of these amazing beetles. In over fifty years, I've never crossed paths with a rhinoceros beetle. I think the only one I ever saw, was a dead one on display in a museum. These type of beetles are one of the strongest creatures on the planet, second only to the less impressively named Dung Beetle. The Rhinoceros Beetle can lift weights of up to 850 times it's own body weight, which in human terms, is like lifting 65 tons. Part of the scarab family of beetles (Scarabaeidae), Rhino Beetles are nocturnal and they usually stay well hidden during the day. The impressive horn that gives these beetles their name, is only found on the males and is mainly used in fights with other males over females.
