Description
One of the very first flowers to signal the start of spring. The crocus has little competition and in my garden is surrounded only by last years sorry looking grass. I used selective colour to help cut out the dull background and highlight this flowers beauty. These wonderful flowers are quite amazing when you think about it. Their corms lie in the ground, not far under the surface, through droughts in the summer and then frozen solid during the harsh cold winter. When the thaw comes, they can sit in water logged ground for days and yet after a few weeks of warmer weather, up they pop like magic, with their strong bright colours. The yellow stigmas in the centre of the flower are so intense that they look like a flame burning to mark the coming of spring. Interestingly, the spice saffron is extracted from the stigmas of a type of crocus.
