Description
Gyllbergen is the largest nature reserve where I live in Borlange, Sweden. When I first visited Gyllbergen, there was no snow. It was still a beautiful place to visit, but it couldn't compare to the breathtaking beauty of Gyllbergen in the winter. I went cross country skiing there when I was quite new to Sweden and I had never seen anything like it before. It is mostly pine forest with lots of open spaces too. When it's not winter, these open spaces can be difficult to cross as it is very wet and boggy. During the winter months, the cold, sub-zero temperatures and a thick covering of snow, make the whole area much more accessible. I did this painting from photo which I borrowed. What was interesting about this particular photo was that I was not the first to paint it. I had seen the first painting on an early visit to Borlange. It was done in either oils or acrylic and I really liked it. By a quirk of fate, I got a quick glance at the original painting again today and I was amazed at how different the two versions are. However much I like that first version, I am very glad that it was not available as a reference for me when I did my painting because I think it would have influenced me and my style.
