Description
A view of the shoreline at low tide, of the picturesque village of Bosham, West Sussex, England. Bosham, pronounced 'Bozzum', is a village situated on an inlet of Chichester harbour, known to have been inhabited by the Romans, but it certainly existed before that. One look into the past of Bosham soon reveals a village steeped in history and legends. By the 8th century, Bosham had become the sixth most important town in Sussex. Bosham is the place where Harold II left England for France to negotiate with William, Duke of Normandy in 1064 and is named in the Bayeux Tapestry, which depicts the Norman conquest of England and the events leading up to it. According to legend, it was in Bosham that Danish King Canute tried to turn back the tide and it is reputed that his eight year old daughter drowned in a local brook and was buried in Bosham Church. It was the delightful Norman roof of the Holy Trinity Church, which attracted me to this scene as a possible painting and I am indebted to FAA photographer Terri Waters for kindly allowing me to use her excellent photograph 'Shore Road Bosham' to paint from: http://fineartamerica.com/featured/shore-road-bosham-terri-waters.html
