Description
Bittern is a class A4 Pacific 4-6-2 steam locomotive built in 1937 for the London and North Eastern Railway. She is seen here at Grosmont station, on loan to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, with her original livery and number, 4464. This iconic steam engine design by Sir Nigel Gresley is better known for locomotive 4468 Mallard, holder of the world speed record for a steam engine at 126 mph set in 1938. Six of this class of locomotive have survived into preservation from thirty-five built. Three of these, including Bittern, are currently certified for mainline use. Steam trains running on the mainline are not normally allowed to exceed 75 mph, but in 2013, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Mallard's record, Bittern was allowed to run at 90 mph. Bittern reached 93 mph which set a new record for a steam locomotive in preservation.
